Making a spiral out of soft jewelry wire using the WigJig Spiral Maker tool.

We have provided web pages and videos showing the basic way of using the WigJig Spiral Maker Tool to make a spiral out of soft jewelry wire.  In this video we provide an alternative approach to using the Spiral Maker.  This alternative approach requires slightly more work on the part of the jewelry craftperson, but it does result in a spiral with a more rounded center.  The more rounded center is frequently considered a better result.

The way we are able to use the WigJig Spiral Maker to make a spiral with a rounded center is by making the initial semi-circle of wire for the center of the spiral before we connect the wire to the Spiral Maker.  This requires us to make one 90 degree bend in the jewelry wire using our chain nose pliers and to make the initial semi-circular bend in the wire using our round nose pliers.

Please note that whenever we use our WigJig Spiral Maker tool, it is as an accessory to one of our WigJig jewelry making tools.  The spiral is actually made between the Spiral Maker and the jewelry making jig, while you look through the bottom of the WigJig jewelry tool to adjust the tension on the jewelry wire.  One important note is that you can ruin the resulting spiral if you pull the wire too firmly.  For this reason, it is important when making a spiral that you look through the bottom of the WigJig jewelry making tool to view the spiral as it is building.  For the first ring of the spiral, you will need to pull more firmly.  As the spiral continues to build, you will find that you will need to pull on the jewelry wire less firmly with each succeeding ring of the spiral.

Because you must look through the jig to view the jewelry wire as the spiral builds, it is also important that the jig itself be clear.  Obviously, a metal jewelry making jig will not work with our Spiral Maker.

In the above text, we have repeatedly stated that the spirals are made out of soft jewelry wire.  Please note that making spirals won't work when using half-hard or hard jewelry wire.  The stiffer wire will not form a tight spiral.

Finally, you can view more information on spirals in our web site here:

Important Notes for Making Wire Spirals Using the WigJig Spiral Maker Tool:

  1. Use only soft jewelry wire.

  2. Adjust the tension you use to pull the wire around in a spiral by looking through the bottom of the WigJig jewelry making jig.  The easiest way to make a mistake is to pull too hard.

  3. After the first ring of wire in the spiral, you will need to pull less firmly.  With each succeeding ring of wire, you will also reduce the force you use to pull the wire.

  4. Spirals work better when made with many small movements of the wire.  Try to move the wire in increments of 30 to 45 degrees at a time.

  5. Finally, because of the way we make spirals with our Spiral Maker tool, we have the opportunity to make permanent spirals and spirals as a link in a chain.  Consider making permanent spirals for your application.
