"P" Loops - Fine Step Jaw Pliers

Instructions for making a "P" loop in jewelry wire using Fine Step Jaw Pliers jewelry tools:

Making Loops in Jewelry Wire Using the Fine Step Jaw Pliers jewelry making tool.Making a "P" loop with step jaw pliers is very similar to making a loop with round nose pliers.   The steps are shown below.

Jewelry Making Supplies Required:

Jewelry Making Tools Required:

  • 18 or 20 gauge round jewelry wire.  20 gauge is preferred for beginners.  18 gauge is appropriate for many jewelry making projects.
  • Nylon Jaw Pliers
  • Step Jaw Pliers
  • Flush Cutter

Jewelry Making Skills Required:

  • Ability to straighten jewelry wire using nylon jaw pliers.
  • Ability to cut jewelry wire using flush cutters.
  • Ability to make a loop in jewelry wire with fine step jaw pliers discussed below.

Step-by-step instructions for making a "P" loop in jewelry wire using the fine step jaw pliers jewelry tool:

Step 1:  Grip a segment of straightened jewelry wire with the step jaw pliers tool.  Hold the pliers in your non-dominant hand.  Allow about 1/16" of jewelry wire to show through the jaws of the pliers.

Step 3:  You will not be able to complete the loop in step 2 because the flat jaw of the pliers will block making a full loop.  As a result, you will need to relax your grip on the jewelry wire and reposition the wire so that you can push the wire to close the gap in the loop.  Reposition the jeelry wire as shown here.

Step 4 to making a loop in jewelry wire using step jaw pliers -- jewelry making tools.Step 4:  Now grip the jewelry wire firmly in the jaws of the pliers and again, using the thumb on your dominant hand, push the wire until the gap in the loop is closed.  Use care to make sure that you do not push the jewelry wire too far.  Stop pushing as soon as the gap in the loop is closed.  When you have pushed the jewelry wire far enough it will appear as shown at right.

These pliers provide the easiest method for getting your starting loops for your jewelry making jig consistently and virtually identical.  The narrowest "step" of the pliers fits the WigJig Delphi, Cyclops, and Centaur jewelry making tool's pegs perfectly.  The middle "step" fits the WigJig Olympus, Olympus-Lite, and Electra jewelry making tools perfectly.

The advantages to using step jaw pliers are (1) each loop is the same size and (2) the flat jaw of the step jaw pliers does not mark the outside of the loop of jewelry wire so you will not see any marks on the outside of your loop.  When making jewelry on a jewelry making jig, it is always a good idea to make the initial loop for your piece using the step jaw pliers.

Step jaw pliers are not perfect for every application and can not replace round nose pliers when making bead dangles, wrapped loops or eye loops.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

The advantage of using step jaw pliers is that with these pliers you can only make a loop in one of three sizes where the round nose pliers jewelry tools can make loops in an infinite number of sizes.  The good news for people who use our WigJig jewelry tools is that the first step in the fine step jaw pliers makes a loop the size of the pegs for our WigJig Delphi, Cyclops or Centaur jewelry tools.  The second step in the jaws of the fine step jaw pliers makes a loop the size of the pegs for the WigJig Olympus, Olympus Lite or Electra jewelry tools.  When you need to make a loop to start a jewelry making project on one of our WigJig jewelry tools, the fine step jaw pliers will always make the loop in the correct size and therefore you will be more consistent and faster when making jewelry with jewelry wire and beads.
