Ear Wires - Kidney 2

Free instructions for making kidney ear wires using jewelry wire and a WigJig jewelry making tool.

Alternative Kidney Ear Wire Jewelry Making Project made using WigJig jewelry tools to shape jewelry wire.

For this ear wire design, we will show two ways of making an ear wire similar to the kidney ear wire that is sold commercially.  The picture shown near-right is a close approximation to the commercial kidney ear wire finding.  The picture shown far-right is a modification to that kidney ear wire design.

Both of these ear wires use a full loop of wire to create the attachment point for your earrings.  We like the full loop because it won't allow your earring body to slide off the ear wire, while the earrings is in storage.  Because this is a full loop, you may be required to use a figure 8 connector or a modified figure 8 connector to connect your earring body to the ear wire.

Alternative Kidney Ear Wire Jewelry Making Project made out of jewelry wire shaped on WigJig jewelry tools.Step-by-step instructions for making a kidney ear wire out of jewelry wire shaped using WigJig jewelry tools:

We will begin our instructions for making the Kidney Ear Wire Finding out of jewelry wire with the instructions for making the ear wire shown at right.

Step 1:  Using your nylon jaw pliers, straighten a segment of 20 gauge jewelry wire 3 inches long.  It is recommended that you use gold, gold-filled, sterling silver, silver-filled, copper or brass wire.  It is not recommended to use silver or gold plated wire, or vinyl coated copper wire.  Some people prefer ear wires made of 21 gauge wire.  Our experience is that 20 gauge works better, but this is a matter of personal preference.

Step 2:  Using your flush cutter, cut the jewelry wire to a length of 3 inches.

Step 3:  Using your fine step jaw pliers, or your round nose pliers, make a "P" loop in the end of the jewelry wire.  This is one of the rare cases where you will want to make the "P" loop in the sharp end of the wire.  In fact you don't need to make a complete "P" loop.  You can make a 3/4 "P" loop because this loop will ultimately be cut off and discarded.

Step 4:  Position two regular pegs and one 3/8" Super Peg in your WigJig jewelry tool as shown below-left.  Then place your initial loop on peg 1 as shown.

Step 5:  Wrap the jewelry wire around peg 2 in the pattern on your jewelry making jig as shown below-center.

Step 6:  Now wrap the jewelry wire around peg 3 in the pattern on your WigJig jewelry tool as shown below-right.

Step 7:  Remove your wire from the jewelry making jig.  At this point the jewelry wire should appear as shown at right.

Step 8:  Grasp the jewelry wire about 1/8" below the loop made on peg three and bend the wire about 90 degrees.  After you have successfully bent the wire, your wire component should appear as shown below-left.

Step 9:  Using your Fine Step Jaw Pliers, or your round nose pliers, make a 180 degree bend in the wire tail about 1/4 inch from the bend that you made in step 8.  See the picture below-center for how your jewelry wire should appear after the 180 degree bend has been completed.

Step 10:  On both ends of the jewelry wire, cut the excess wire with your flush cutter.  See the picture below-right for how the wire should appear after the excess wire has been removed.

Step 12:  Open the ear wire as shown below-left.  Using your metal chasing hammer and an anvil or bench block, hammer the rounded portion of your ear wire finding on both sides.  Your goal is that the wire should be slightly visibly flattened on the rounded portion of the jewelry wire component.  This will help to harden the wire and will make the rounded portion of the wire springy.  Only hammer the rounded portion.  Do not hammer the entire jewelry wire component.

Step 13:  Close the ear wire finding.  At this point, your Kidney Ear Wire is completed and should appear as shown below-left.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

We've provided to approaches to making a locking kidney shapped ear wire out of jewelry wire shaped on WigJig jewelry making tools.  Both approaches will work fine to allow you to make this ear wire.  The shape for both ear wires is similar but not the same.  These locking ear wires are good to make if you will be using gemstones in your earrings.  They are not as appropriate when you are making earrings out of inexpensive beads.  Should you decide that you want to view our instructions for making other ear wire designs, please select the link below.
