First, let's discuss why these earrings are called Square Knot earrings.  The reason is simple, in these earrings we do in jewelry wire, what is done in rope to make a square knot.  In rope, the knot may not appear identical to these earrings because in rope, the knot pulls tightly together.  Because wire is stiffer than rope, this square knot in jewelry wire is more open.

This Square Knot Gemstones and Beads jewelry making project is an advanced beginners project.  We made these earrings in three sizes and in three different combinations of beads/gemstones.  The earrings shown at right use 8mm Aquamarine gemstones along with a 4mm bicone Swarovski aqua bead.  The earrings far-left use an 8mm round Swarovski violet bead.  The earrings near-left use 7mm Paula Radke dichroic glass beads.

For beginners you will find that it will be easier to make these earrings using 20 gauge jewelry wire, but the finished earrings will have a more bold appearance when made with 18 gauge wire.  It may be a good idea to practice the technique using 20 gauge practice wire.

Step-by-step instructions for making these earrings in the next section.  We will start with the instructions for making the earrings shown above-right.

Step 1:  Using your flush cutter, cut two segments of 18 or 20 gauge jewelry wire each 3 inches long.

Step 2:  Straighten these two segments of jewelry wire by repeatedly pulling them through the jaws of your nylon jaw pliers.  Step 3 to instructions for making Square Knot Gemstone and Beads Earrings using jewelry wire.

Step 3:  Now we need to make a wrapped loop in one end of each segment of jewelry jewelry wire.  Grasp the wire about 3/4" from the end using your bent chain nose pliers and make a 90 degree bend in the wire.

Step 4 to instructions for making Square Knot Earrings using WigJig jewelry tools.Step 4:  Using your round nose pliers make a full loop in the wire, near the right angle bend, but on the shorter wire segment.  After making the loop, adjust the position of the loop so that the loop is centered above the longer jewelry wire segment.  See the picture at left.

Instructions for making Square Knot Beads & Gemstone Earrings using jewelry wire Step 5Step 5:  Now we need to wrap this loop closed.  This is done by grasping the round loop in your bent chain nose pliers and holding tightly while you push the wire tail 180 degrees around.  We will wrap this loop closed with just one wrap.  Holding the loop tightly in your bent chain nose pliers while wrapping the wire preserves the round shape of the loop.

Step 6 to instructions for making Square Knot Earrings using beads and common jewelry supplies.

Step 6:  Using your flush cutter cut the excess jewelry wire.  Leave about 1/16" of excess wire to push flat to complete the wrap.

Step 7:  Grasp the loop in one pair of bent chain nose pliers while using a second pair of pliers to push the Instructions for making Square Knot Gemstone & Beads Earrings Step 8cut wire tail flat.  Do this for both segments of jewelry wire.

Step 8:  Now we are ready to use our WigJig jewelry tool to shape this jewelry wire into a teardrop shape.  Place the initial loop that you made on peg 1 and wrap the wire around peg 2 in your WigJig jewelry tool as shown.  Peg two is a 3/16" Super Peg for the jig we use.  Push the wire so that with no pressure applied the wire will remain in position as shown.

Step 9 to Square Knot Gemstone & Beads Earrings made using WigJig jewelry making tools.

Step 9:  Remove the wire from your WigJig jewelry tool.  It should appear as shown at right.  Instructions for making Square Knot Earrings using common jewelry supplies Step 10

Step 10:  At this point we need to wrap the wire around itself one time to make this wire shape permanent.  The first step in getting ready to wrap is to grasp the wire with your bent chain nose pliers just below the point where you want to do the wrap and bend the jewelry wire about 80 degrees.  When done, your wire should appear as shown at left.  Your goal is that the wire should be very slightly below the initial wrapped loop, in Step 11 to instructions for making Square Knot Gemstone and Beads Earrings.position so that when it is wrapped the two wraps are touching one another.

Step 11:  Grasp both sides of the teardrop shaped wire, just below the bend you just made, with your bent chain nose pliers.  By grasping both sides of the wire component and holding them tightly you are preserving the shape of the component while you push the wire tail around to create the wrap.  While firmly holding the wire, push the wire tail around 180 degrees.  When you are done, the wire component should appear as shown at right.  Instructions for making Square Knot Earrings Jewelry Making Project -- Step 12

Step 12:  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess jewelry wire leaving about 1/16" of wire.  Then grasp the wire component with your bent chain nose pliers at the same point you did in Step 11 and using a second pair of chain nose pliers, squeeze and twist the cut 1/16" wire segment so that it lays flat.  This makes the teardrop shape permanent.

SStep 13 to instructions for making Square Knot Gemstone and Beads using WigJig jewelry tools.tep 13:  In order to be able to connect two of these teardrop wire components into a square knot shape, you need to bend the loop in the teardrop as shown at right.  The orientation of the wire component is very important for this step.  Hold the jewelry wire component so that the side where you started the wrap is down and the side where you finished the wrap is up (See the picture above-right.)  Now we are ready to make the rounded bend in the teardrop.  This is best done with Fine Step Jaw Pliers or with a Master Coiler pliers.  Grasp the teardrop shape about 1/8" from the bottom of the teardrop, and bend the wire about 60 degrees.  If you don't have Fine Step Jaw pliers or a Master Coiler, you can use round nose pliers, but they won't work quite as well.  Perform these steps to make a second wire component identical to the one shown, then proceed to step 14.

Step 14 to instructions for making Square Knot Earrings showing jewelry wire component.Step 14:  Now we need to connect the two wire components into the square knot shape.  If you have difficulty in connecting the two jewelry wire components, you may need to make the bend in the bottom of the teardrop (made in Step 13) larger.  See the pictures below for the series of steps in connecting the two components.  In the fourth picture, below-right, nylon jaw pliers were used to flatten the two wire components.  Squeezing and flattening the wire component locks in the shape.  Once this step is completed, the two pieces of wire will remain in place.  This is your completed Square Knot wire component.  It can be used as a link in a chain for a bracelet or necklace or it can be used as the body for an earring as we will do here.

Step 15:  To make the earrings shown at right with the low wall bezel finding and 8mm gemstone, you first need to assemble the gemstone and finding.  This is very easy to do.  Our step-by-step instructions for setting a gemstone in the low wall bezel finding can be found here.   Once you have set the gemstone, you connect the loop in the top of the finding with the loop at the bottom of the Square Knot wire component with a simple jump ring.  In these earrings, we used a medium jump rings that was made using the middle step of the Fine Step Jaw Pliers.  Connecting the two loops was done by opening the jump ring, sliding it into position in both loops and then closing the jump ring.  Instructions for opening and closing jump rings can be found here.

Step 16:  Now we are ready to attach the ear wire to the top of these earrings.  If you choose to use a commercial ear wire, all you will need to do is to open the loop in the ear wire and connect it to the top loop in the Square Knot wire component then close the loop in the ear wire.  If you choose to make your own custom ear wire with wrapped loop and bead like the one shown at right, we suggest adding a 4mm bead in a color that compliments the color of the gemstone.  We used a 4mm Swarovski Aqua Bicone bead with our ear wire.  Because this ear wire uses a wrapped loop to close the loop in the bottom of the ear wire, you must connect the loop in the ear wire to the loop in the Square Knot wire component before wrapping the loop closed.  This completes your first Square Knot Gemstones and Beads Earring.  Follow the same steps to make a second earring.

Alternative design for making earrings using WigJig jewelry tools:

We have two alternative designs for our Square Knot Earrings Jewelry Making Project.  The option shown on the left are our Small Square Knot Beaded Earrings and the option shown on the right are our Large Square Knot Beaded Earrings.  These two options use beads instead of gemstones.  Both are shown here with purchased ear wires instead of the custom made ear wire in the above earrings.  Headpins were used to connect the beads to the bottom of the Square Knot wire component.  The technique for making the bead dangle as the bottom is described here.

More alternative jewelry making designs made using WigJig jewelry tools:

The peg patterns on WigJig jewelry tool for the small and large Square Knot wire components are shown at right.  The small peg pattern uses a 3/16" Super Peg and the larger peg pattern uses a 1/4" Super Peg.

When making the small peg pattern, we suggest using 20 gauge jewelry wire and not 18 gauge jewelry wire.  When making the large peg pattern you could use jewelry wire as large as 16 gauge.  (Using 16 gauge wire is not recommended for a beginner.  If you are a beginner, use 18 gauge.)
