Square Chandeliers with Chain

Instructions for making Square Chandelier Earrings with Chain using WigJig jewelry tools, jewelry wire, beads and other jewelry supplies:

Square Chandelier Earring w. Chain -- Jewelry Making Project
One of the concepts that we like to use when making jewelry is that it is easier to make jewelry items out of many simple to make components, connected together.  This turns out to be easier to do rather than trying to make a piece of jewelry out of one hard to make component.  The earrings shown at right are made from several simple to make components connected together by opening and closing loops.  This project probably isn't suitable for your first jewelry making project, but it is certainly suitable for a relative newcomer to making jewelry.

These earrings are made using the following components:

  • "V" shaped component that we will make using a pattern on any WigJig jewelry tool,
  • Four spacer bar components made on any WigJig jewelry tool, and
  • Jump ring component made out of jewelry wire using step jaw pliers.
  • Eight figure 8 connectors made out of jewelry wire.

These earrings are somewhat larger than many of our designs.  This pattern may be modified to make a similar design in a smaller size.

Jewelry Making Supplies:

Finished Square Chandelier Earring w. Chain -- Jewelry Making ProjectStep-by-step instructions for making the Square Chandelier Earrings out of jewelry wire, gemstones and common jewelry supplies using WigJig jewelry tools:

Step 1:  We will begin this jewelry making project by making the "V" shaped wire component that forms the bottom of the body of the earrings.  This component is made using five regular metal pegs and any of our WigJig tools.  We have prepared a template for making these earrings in Adobe .pdf file format.  The template shows the pattern for the WigJig Centaur.  The same template will work for the WigJig Delphi jewelry tool.  For any of our other jewelry making jigs, you will need to adapt the pattern to your WigJig jewelry tool by placing your jewelry making jig on the pattern and finding a peg placement that will closely approximate this pattern.

Step 2:  To start making the "V" shaped wire component, cut a segment of 18 gauge practice wire 4" long.  Half hard jewelry wire will work best for your finished piece and you will probably find that 3 3/4" of wire will be adequate, but start with 4" of practice wire and be prepared to measure how much excess wire you have when you are done.

Step 3:  Using your fine step jaw pliers if you have them, or your round nose pliers if you don't have the step jaw pliers, make a loop in the end of the jewelry wire with the flush cut.

Step 4:  Hold the wire by that loop and straighten the jewelry wire by repeatedly pulling it through the jaws of yourPeg Pattern on WigJig jewelry tool for Square Chandelier Earrings Jewelry Making Project nylon jaw pliers.

Step 5:  See the peg pattern on our WigJig Centaur jewelry tool at right.  Pegs 1 -5 are used to make the "V" shaped wire component.  Pegs 1 and 6, 7 and 8, and 9 and 10 are used to make spacer bars and will be discussed in a later step.  Start by placing just pegs 1 and 2 in your jig.
Step 6 to instructions for making Square Chandelier Earrings showing jewelry wire on WigJig jewelry making tool.
Step 6:  Place the initial loop in your wire on peg 1 and position the wire adjacent to peg 2 as shown at left.  Then push the jewelry wire around peg 2 so that with no pressure applied the wire rests adjacent to the empty hole for peg 3.  Push with the tip of your index finger on your dominant hand.  Don't pull the wire.  Many people find it easier to keep the wire stationary and move the jewelry making jig with their non-dominant hand.  Please see our WigJig Basics Video.

Step 7 to instructions for making Square Chandelier Earring w. Chain showing jewelry wire on WigJig jewelry tool.Step 7:  Now we need to flip the jewelry wire component over so that the initial loop is on peg 5 and the second loop is on peg 4.  Add peg 3 to the pattern and remove pegs 1 and 2.  The reason that we do this is that the finished wire component will be two layers of wire instead of growing in layers with each additional loop that you make.

Step 8:  Push the jewelry wire around peg 3 in the pattern on your WigJig jewelry making tool.  Push the wire until it is adjacent to the empty holes for pegs one and two as shown below-left.

Step 9:  Remove the jewelry wire from the WigJig jewelry tool.  Add pegs 1 and 2 and remove peg 5.  Position the initial loop on peg 1 as shown below-center.

Step 10:  Push the jewelry wire around peg 4 as shown below-right.  Push the wire until it is adjacent to the empty hole for peg 5 with no pressure applied.

Step 11:  Add peg 5 to the pattern in your jewelry making jig and push the wire around peg 5 as shown at right.

Step 12 to instructions for making Square Chandelier Earring showing jewelry wire component.Step 12:  Remove the "V" shaped wire component from your WigJig jewelry tool.  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess wire with the flat side of your flush cutter toward the finished piece.  After cutting the excess wire, use your bent chain nose pliers to close the final loop in the wire component.  The completed "V" shaped wire component should appear as shown at right.

Step 13:  Now we are ready to make the second wire component for these earrings.  See the close-up picture of the earring body below-left.  The first spacer bar that we will make will be used to connect the "V" shaped wire component to the jump ring at the top of the earring body.  These spacer bar components make up the top sides of the square body of the earrings.  See the peg pattern on our WigJig jewelry tool below-center.  Use pegs 1 and 6 to make this spacer bar.  Use about 2" of 18 gauge wire and follow the instructions for making a spacer bar found here.  Make two identical spacer bars, using pegs 1 and 6, for each earring (four total).

Step 14:  We also use the spacer bar component to hang the low wall bezel finding from the earring body.  This spacer bar is made with about 1 1/4" of 20 gauge jewelry wire and uses pegs 7 and 8 for the 10mm gemstone and pegs 9 and 10 for the 8mm gemstone.  Follow the same instructions you used above to make two spacer bars per earring, one using pegs 7 and 8 and another using pegs 9 and 10 on your jewelry making jig.

Step 15 to Square Chandelier Earring w. Chain -- Jewelry Making ProjectStep 15:  Now we need to make a jump ring to connect between the top of the earring body and the ear wire.  Use about 2 " of 20 gauge jewelry wire and make two jump rings.

Step 16:  Hanging the chains from the "V" shaped wire component will be accomplished with figure 8 connectors.  Use about 1 1/2" of 20 gauge wire to make each figure 8 connector.  You will need to make a total of four figure 8 connectors for each earring.

Step 17:  Now we are ready to set our gemstones into our low wall bezel findings (video instructions).  Written instructions are here.  Use Item 3209 and Item 3210 for gold-filled or Item 3211 and Item 3212 for sterling silver.  Select a pair of 10mm round gemstones and a pair of 8mm round gemstones here.  Setting the gemstones in the low wall bezel finding is very easy and only requires your thumb and forefinger.  Set all four stones into the low wall bezel findings.

Step 18:  Cut two segments of medium commercial chain each 3" long and two more segments each 4 1/2" long.  Item 2606 in gold-filled or Item 2613 in sterling silver are recommended.  Attach a figure 8 connector to each end of each segment of chain.  This is done using your bent chain nose pliers and opening the loop on the figure 8 connector, making the connection, then closing the loop.

Step 19 to instructions for making Square Chandelier Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectStep 19:  Now we are ready to assemble the earrings.  See the picture at right for a close up view of the body of the earrings.  Start by connecting one of the long spacer bars to each end of the "V" shaped wire component.  This is done by opening one of the end loops on the spacer bar, connecting it to the end loop on the "V" shaped wire component and then closing the loop in the spacer bar.

Step 20:  Connect the opposite end of the spacer bars to the jump ring that you made.  Open the jump ring, connect it to both spacer bars and then close the jump ring.  At this point you should have a square earring body.

Step 17:  Connect your commercial ear wire to the top of the jump ring.  This is done by opening the loop in the ear wire finding (not by opening the jump ring)  and connecting it to the jump ring, then closing the loop in the ear wire finding.

Step 18:  At this time we are ready to add the chain to the bottom of the "V" shaped wire component.  Connect one of the figure 8 connectors from one of the longer, 4 1/2" wire segments to one of the outside loops on the "V" shaped wire component.  Then connect the figure 8 connector on the opposite end of the chain to the loop on the opposite end of the "V" shaped wire component.  Be careful so that you don't introduce any bends or twists in the chain.  Connect the figure 8 connectors on one of the 3" wire segments to the middle connectors on each leg of the "V" shaped component.

Step 19:  Connect one end of each short spacer bar to the loop in each low wall bezel finding.  Use the longer of the two remaining spacer bars, made on pegs 7 and 8 to connect to the 10mm gemstone and the shorter of the remaining spacer bars to connect to the 8mm gemstone.

Step 20:  Connect the 8mm low wall bezel finding to the bottom loop in the "V" shaped wire component and the 10mm low wall bezel finding to the jump ring between the two large spacer bars.  See the close up picture above right if you have any questions.  Your finished earrings should appear as shown at right.

Finished Square Chandelier Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectAlternative Earring Making Designs:

The design shown at right can be made using 8mm and 6mm gemstones instead of 10mm and 8mm as we discussed earlier.    You can view the peg pattern for this smaller version on our WigJig Centaur jewelry tool below-left.  Using this smaller peg pattern, you should shorten the segments of chain by 1/2".  Use 2 1/2" and 4" of chain for these smaller earrings.Smaller Peg Pattern for Square Chandelier Earrings shown on WigJig jewelry tool.

We hope you like these two designs.
