Instructions for making Simple Ear Wire earrings using WigJig jewelry tools, jewelry wire, beads and common jewelry supplies:

Simple Jewelry Wire Earrings made using beads, jewelry wire and common jewelry making supplies.Simple Jewelry Wire Ear Wire made using WigJig jewelry tools, beads and common jewelry supplies. The prices for jewelry findings has increased significantly in the past couple of months.  Unfortunately, the prices for gold and silver have increased and these metals are the raw materials for most jewelry findings.  For those who are concerned over the high price for jewelry findings, here is a project that will allow you to make your own ear wires.  Even better, this project will allow you to customize your ear wires so that they appear hand made by a professional.

In this project, we use a 1/2" Super Peg to make a round ear wire, but we make the ear wire with a 2mm to 4mm bead.  Ideally, the bead would be the same color as the larger beads used in the body of the earring.  Please see the pictures at right for the picture of the ear wire by itself and for a sample earring made with that ear wire.

This is a beginner's jewelry making project.

Step 1:  Pull a 3 1/2" length of jewelry wire from your spool or coil and using your nylon jaw pliers, straighten that segment of wire.

Step 2:  Using your flush cutter, cut the jewelry wire to at a length of 3 1/2 inches.

Step 3:  Using your chain nose or bent chain nose pliers, grip the jewelry wire about 3/4" from the end and bend the wire 90 degrees.  See the picture below-left for how the wire should appear.

Step 4:  Using your step jaw pliers (preferred) or your round nose pliers, make an eye loop in the wire and adjust the loop until it is centered.  See the picture below, center-left.

Step 5:  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess jewelry wire at the point where it starts to overlap.  Position your thumb on your non-dominant hand so that you can rest the cutter against your thumb nail to cut precisely at the point where the wire starts to overlap.  See the picture below, center-right.

Step 6:  Add your 2mm to 4mm bead to the jewelry wire and slide it all the way down until it contacts your loop that you made in step 5.  See the picture below-right.

Step 11:  Using your flush cutter, cut the jewelry wire about 1/4" from the point where the loop begins to overlap.  See the picture at right.

Step 12:  Using your cup bur or bur cup, file the end of the cut wire until it is rounded and smooth.

Step 13:  In order to make this ear wire shape as permanent as possible, use either a metal chasing hammer or a nylon hammer, and an anvil or bench block to hammer the rounded portion of the wire.  By hammering the jewelry wire, you are hardening the wire and this helps to make this shape permanent.

This completes this ear wire design.  Now you are ready to connect your earring body.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

When we make our own ear wires out of jewelry wire, we like to make them in a unique manner so that they stand out as being hand made and not made by a machine.  By adding a bead that is complimentary to the beads in your earring body, you can make a unique ear wire that shows that it wasn't made by a machine.  If you want the earrings you make to stand out as both high quality and handmade, consider making your own ear wires and incorporating a bead as shown here.
