Remembrance Earrings

Instructions for making Remembrance Earrings, made using WigJig jewelry tools out of jewelry wire, beads and common jewelry supplies:

The symbol for breast cancer awareness is a pink ribbon folded in a loop.  These earrings try to copy the form and color of this pink ribbon into an earring.

Many people want projects for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October).  Here is an easy earring project.  This jewelry making project is suitable for beginners.

Remembrance Earrings

Jewelry Supplies Required:

  • 14 inches of 20 gauge Rose Silver-plate Artistic Wire
  • One pair of commercial ear wire findings
  • Four 6 mm crystal beads in red or pink

Jewelry Tools Required:

  • Round Nose Pliers
  • Flush Cutters
  • Bent Chain Nose Pliers
  • Nylon Jaw Pliers (recommended)
  • Any WigJig jewelry tool
  • 1/4" Super Peg for the jewelry making jig you use
  • 2 metal pegs for the WigJig jewelry tool you use
  • 30 minutes of free time

Step-by-step instructions for making Remembrance Earrings out of jewelry wire, beads and common jewelry supplies using WigJig jewelry tools:

Step 1:  Cut and make a loop in one end of a 2 3/4" segment of 20 gauge Rose Silver-plate Artistic Wire.

Step 2:  While holding the wire by the loop, straighten the wire by pulling it through the jaws of your nylon jaw pliers.

Step 3:  Position two metal pegs and one 1/4" Super Peg in your jewelry making jig as shown at right.  The WigJig Delphi jewelry tool was used for this piece, but this wire component could be made on any WigJig.

Step 4:  Wrap the wire around the pegs as shown.

Step 5:  Remove the wire from the jewelry making jig and cut the excess wire.  Remember to cut with the flat side of your flush cutter toward the finished piece.  Close the final loop after cutting the wire.

Step 6:  Make two bead dangles and hang a 6mm bead from each bottom loop in your wire component.

Step 7:  Attach a commercial ear wire finding to the top of your earring.

Repeat the above process for your second earring.

One of the challenges in using colored wire is that you probably can not purchase findings in the same color as the wire.  To complete these earrings two findings are required.  The first is the ear wire finding.  It should be emphasized that Artistic Wire, or any other colored wire is not appropriate for use as an ear wire.  The dyes in the wire contain chemicals that are not appropriate for use in the human body.

How to Make a Bead Dangle using Artistic Wire brand jewelry wire and beads:

The head pins used in making these earrings can be made out of Artistic Wire.  The process used to make a head pin and bead dangle with a spiral bottom is described below.  The following section will provide the instructions for making a head pin with a hammered bottom.

Step 1:  Cut and straighten a 1 1/2" long segment of 20 gauge wire.

Step 2:  Make a small loop in one end of the wire.

Step 3:  Using your bent chain nose pliers grasp the loop and continue wrapping the wire around the loop.  Wrap in small segments of about 60 degrees at a time. Continue the wrap until you have two full revolutions of wire.

Step 4:  Using your bent chain nose pliers grasp the wire at the top of the spiral and bend it up.  The wire should be centered on the spiral when you are done.

Step 5:  Thread your 6mm bead on the wire and slide it down so that it rests on top of the spiral.

Step 6:  While holding the wire so that you can see the full spiral (not just the edge of the spiral), grasp the wire on top of the bead and bend it back.  After the bend, the wire should appear as shown at right.

Step 7:  Using your round nose pliers, reorient the piece so that you can grasp the wire at the bend you made in step 6, but on the horizontal wire segment.  Make a loop in the wire at this point.  This is a two step process as you will need to reposition and re-grip the wire in your round nose pliers in order to complete the loop.

Step 8:  Cut the excess wire making sure that the flat side of your flush cutter is toward the finished piece.  Close the loop that you just completed.

Alternative approach on how to make a bead dangle with Artistic Wire brand jewelry wire:

The earrings shown at right used hammered wire at the bottom to make the bead dangles.  In order to do this technique a metal chasing hammer and anvil are required.  The steps in making a bead dangle using hammered Artistic Wire are described below.

Finished Rememberance Earrings made with WigJig jewelry tools and common jewelry making supplies.

Step 1:  Cut and straighten a 1 1/2" long segment of 20 gauge Artistic Wire.

Step 2:  Using a metal chasing hammer and anvil, hammer the last 1/4" of the wire to flatten it.  Hammer to the point where the wire is about 1.5 to twice as wide as the un-hammered wire.

Step 3:  Tread a 6mm bead onto the wire.  For these earrings we used Swarovski glass crystal beads as the hole will fit 20 gauge wire, but just barely, so that after hammering the wire, the bead will not be able to slide past the hammered point.

Step 4:  From this point the instructions are the same as steps 6, 7 and 8 in the prior seciton.  Grasp the wire at the top of the bead, with the flat side of the hammered wire facing you, and bend the wire back about 90 degrees.

Step 5:  Grasp the wire with your round nose pliers at the bend you just made and make a loop in the wire.  This will be a two step process as you will need to adjust your grip with the pliers in order to complete the loop.

Step 6:  Cut the excess wire, making sure that the flat side of your flush cutter is toward the finished piece.  Close the loop you just made with your bent chain nose pliers.

Alternative designs for making Rememberance Earrings using WigJig jewelry tools:

The earrings shown at right used hammered wire at the bottom to hold the beads on the wire.  This is a very simple design to make but does require a chasing hammer and anvil.

Step 1:  Cut and make a loop in a 3" segment of 20 gauge Rose Silver-plate Artistic Wire.  Use round nose pliers or Fine Step Jaw Pliers to make this loop.

Step 2:  Straighten the wire by holding the initial loop you just made.

Step 3:  Position two metal pegs and one 1/4" Super Peg in your WigJig jewelry tool as shown at right.

Step 4:  Place the initial loop that you made on peg 1 and wrap the wire as shown.

Instructions for making Rememberance Earrings showing jewelry wire shaped on WigJig jewelry making tools.

Step 5:  Remove the wire from the jewelry making jig and cut the wire where it touched peg 1 and peg 3.  This will remove the initial loop and leave you with straight wire

Sept 6:  Add a bead to both bottom wire segments.  Slide the beads up, beyond where the wire crosses over.

Step 7:  Hammer the last 1/4" of wire on both bottom segments with your chasing hammer and anvil.  Don't over hammer, but hammer enough that the wire is about 1.5 to twice as wide as the un-hammered wire.

Step 8:  Slide the beads down until they rest against the hammered wire.

Step 9:  Add your ear wire finding to the top of the earring by opening the loop in the ear wire finding and adding the wire, then closing the loop in the finding.
