Two Gemstone Earrings

Instructions for making Two Gemstone Earrings out of jewelry wire, gemstones and jewelry supplies using WigJig jewelry tools:

2 Gemstone Earrings Jewelry Making Project made using jewelry wire shaped on WigJig jewelry tools.

These earrings are called the Two Gemstone Earrings because they obviously have two 2 carat round gemstones (8mm in diameter) set in each earring using our Low Wall Bezel setting.  These earrings are an excellent way to incorporate birthstones into some really nice colored stones like the sapphire stones shown here look great.  Lighter stones like our simulated diamonds (cubic zirconia) may look better when using gold wire.

These earrings are made using our WigJig Centaur or Delphi jewelry tools, but the peg pattern could be easily modified to make the same shape on any of our other jewelry making jigs.  The pattern uses 10 regular metal pegs for the WigJig jewelry tool you use.

These earrings are made with our round medium curb chain, Item 2613, Item 2606 or Item 2904.

This is an advanced beginner's to intermediate jewelry making project

2 Stone Earrings Jewelry Making Project made using gemstones and common jewelry making supplies.Step-by-step instructions for making Two Gemstone Earrings using WigJig jewelry tools, jewelry wire, and common jewelry supplies:

The peg pattern for making these earrings using our WigJig jewelry tools is rather unique.  We have a top wire component and a bottom wire component for these earrings.  At right, we show the peg pattern for the top wire component on the bottom and the bottom wire component on the top.  These two patterns are identical, but inverted.  Instructions for making these two wire components begin below.

Step 1:  Cut two 18 gauge jewelry wire segments 3 inches long and two segments 2 1/2" long.  1/2 hard jewelry wire is preferred.

Step 2:  Using your round nose pliers or your fine step jaw pliers (preferred) make a loop in the end of your cut jewelry wire with the flush cut.  Peg pattern on WigJig jewelry tool for 2 making Gemstone Earrings by shaping jewelry wire.

Step 3:  While holding the loop in the end of the wire, pull the jewelry wire segments through your nylon jaw pliers repeatedly to straighten the wire.

Step 4:  We will start with the top wire component.  Add pegs 1 and 2 to your WigJig jewelry making tool.  Place the initial loop from one of the 2 1/2" segments on peg 1 and bend the jewelry wire against peg 2 until the wire rests against  the empty hole for peg 3 with no pressure applied.

Step 5:  Add peg 3 to the pattern on your jewelry making jig and wrap the jewelry wire around peg 3 so that it rests against the empty hole for peg 4 with no pressure applied.

Step 6:  Add peg 4 and bend the jewelry wire against peg 4 so that with no pressure applied, the wire will rest against the empty hole for peg 5 with no pressure applied.

Step 7:  Add peg 5 to the pattern on your WigJig jewelry tool and wrap the jewelry wire around peg 5.  Step 8 to instructions for making 2 Gemstones Earrings showing jewelry wire after removal from WigJig jewelry tools.

Step 8:  Remove the jewelry wire from your jewelry making jig and cut the excess wire.  Close the final loop using your bent chain nose pliers.

Step 9 to instructions for making 2 Gemstone Earrings showing shaping jewelry wire using common jewelry tools.Step 9:  Now we need to change the orientation of the two end loops on this top wire component.  We begin by converting the loops into eye loops

Step 10 to instructions for making 2 Gemstone Earrings Jewelry Making Project showing shape of jewelry wire.Step 10:  At this point, we need to rotate the two end loops 90 degrees.  We do this by grasping one side of the top wire component in your nylon jaw pliers and while holding this side in place, you use your bent chain nose pliers to grasp the end loop and twist 90 degrees.

Step 12:  Now we start making the bottom wire component which is easier to make than the top wire component.  Using one of the 3" segments of wire, position pegs 6 and 7 in your WigJig jewelry tool.  Place the initial loop on peg 6 and wrap the jewelry wire around peg 7 so that with no pressure applied it rests against the empty hole for peg 8.

Step 14:  Add peg 9 to the pattern on your WigJig jewelry tool and wrap the jewelry wire around peg 9 until with no pressure applied, the wire rests adjacent to the empty hole for peg 10.

Step 15:  Now wrap the jewelry wire around peg 10.Step 16 to instructions for making 2 Gemstone Earrings showing jewelry wire shape after removal from WigJig jewelry tools.

Step 16:  Remove the wire from your jewelry making jig and cut the excess wire.  Close the final loop using your bent chain nose pliers.  The bottom wire component should now appear as shown at right.

Step 17 to instructions for making 2 Gemstone Earrings Jewelry Making Project showing connected jewelry wire components.Step 17:  At this point we are ready to connect the top wire component to the bottom wire component.  This is done by opening one end loop on one side of the top wire component with your bent chain nose pliers and connecting it to the end loop on the bottom wire component then closing that loop.  On the opposite side, you will need to open the end loops on both the top wire component and the bottom wire component, then connect the two components and then closing both loops using your bent chain nose pliers.

Step 19:  Now make a figure 8 connector with 20 gauge jewelry wire.  Open the loops in the figure 8 to connect one of the gemstones to the middle loop in the bottom wire component then close both loops.

Step 20:  Now, make or buy five medium sized jump rings out of 20 gauge jewelry wire.  Use one of these jump rings to connect the second gemstone to the loop in the middle of the top wire component.  Closing the jump ring is easier if you use two bent chain nose pliers.

2 Stone Earrings Jewelry Making Project made from common jewelry supplies.Step 21:  At this point we are ready to add the commercial ear wire finding.  Open the loop in the bottom of the ear wire finding and connect it to the loop at the top of the top wire component.  Close the loop with your bent chain nose pliers.

Step 22:  We finish these earrings by adding segments of commercial chain to the bottom wire component.   First, using one of your jump rings, connect a 4" segment of medium, round curb style chain to one of the outside loops in the bottom wire component.  Connect the opposite end of the chain to the outside loop on the opposite end of the bottom wire component.

Step 23:  Using another jump ring, connect a 2 1/2" segment of the same chain to one of the empty loops in the bottom wire component.  Using your final jump ring, connect the end of the 2 1/2" segment of chain to the last empty loop in the bottom wire component.  This completes your 2 gemstone Earrings.

In general, when making jewelry using gemstones, we recommend  using either lever back or post style earrings that are held in place instead of the shepherd's hook style of ear wires shown here.  Unfortunately, we were out of post or lever back ear wires in sterling silver when we made these earrings.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

We think that you will like these earrings in many different gemstone and jewelry wire combinations.  Adding the gemstones to your earrings adds elegance and perceived value.  The blue sapphire gemstones we used here do not show up as well in pictures as they do in real life.  We suggest considering many gemstones for an earring design like this one.  Please don't limit yourself to blue sapphire.
