W-Shaped Beaded Earrings

Instructions for making the "W" Shaped Beaded Earrings using jewelry wire, beads, common jewelry supplies and WigJig jewelry tools:

W Chandelier Beaded Earrings made out of jewelry wire and beads on WigJig jewelry tools.

These W Chandelier Earrings are an intermediate jewelry project.  They are relatively easy to make but they are made of three jewelry wire components and take approximately 26 steps to make.  While each individual step is relatively easy to accomplish, there are just a lot of steps.  The earring shown at right was made with Swarovski Crystal AB Bicone beads in 4mm and 6mm, gold-filled jewelry wire and common jewelry supplies.  The Swarovski Crystal AB beads have the sparkle that makes these earrings really dressy.  They are not for every day wear, but would look great with an evening gown.

For a beginner to jewelry making, it is suggested that they start with the Wire Chandeliers Earrings project rather than this one.

Step-by-step instructions for making the "W" Shaped Beaded Earrings using jewelry wire, beads, jewelry supplies and WigJig jewelry making tools:

Step 1:  Cut and straighten a piece of 20 gauge jewelry wire 4 3/4 to 5 inches long.  1/2 hard wire works better for this project if it is available.

Step 2:  Make a loop in one end of the jewelry wire.  Use your Fine Step Jaw Pliers if you have them, if not, use round nose pliers.

Step 3:  Position four metal pegs on your WigJig jewelry tool as shown at right and place the loop you just made over the lower, right peg.

Step 3

Step 4:  Given that you now know where these peg go, it is easier to continue by removing the third and fourth pegs (furthest right) as they can be in the way.  Make a loop around the second peg in your jewelry making jig with your jewelry wire as shown at right.

Step 6:  Add the fourth metal peg to your WigJig jewelry tool and make a loop around this peg as shown at right.  The angle of the V is not very important at this point, but the angle shown at right is a good approximation of what will be required.  This angle will be easy to adjust later.

Step 6

Step 7:  Remove the wire from the WigJig jewelry tool and flip it over.  Replace it back on the jig as shown at right.  This step is important as it will allow us to make the loops on either side of the V shaped wire component to be identical.

Step 8:  Remove the first and second pegs.  As before, they will be in your way at this point.  Now make a loop around the third peg in your jewelry making jig as shown at right.  You can see the second peg in this photograph sitting on the left by itself.  When you remove a peg, you just need to move it a few holes out of the way.  Position it so that it will be easy to remember where it went.

Step 11

Step 12:  Now we need to change the initial loop at the end of the legs of the V into an "Eye" loop instead of a "P" loop.  This is done by grasping the wire near the loop with the tips of your round nose pliers and bending the wire back.  For details on converting a loop into an eye loop, click here.  This completes the V-shaped wire component.

Step 14:  Make a loop in one end of the jewelry wire segment that you just cut.

Step 15:  Now remove the second 1/4" Super Peg and set it aside.  Place the loop you made in your jewelry wire over the lower right metal peg.  Wrap the wire around the first 1/4" Super Peg and around the second (middle) metal peg as shown at right.

Step 18

Step 19:  Now we need to complete the W shaped wire component.  This is done by grasping the eye loops on either end (one at a time) with your bent chain nose pliers and rotating 90 degrees.  When completed the two end loops will be vertical when the rest of the component is horizontal as shown at right.

Step 19

Step 20:  Now we begin to make the Modified Figure 8 connector.  Begin by cutting a straightening a piece of jewelry wire 1 1/4" long.  Make a loop in the end of the jewelry wire.

Step 21

Step 22:  Now we begin the modifications to the Figure 8.  Grasp the loop in your bent chain nose pliers and bend the jewelry wire at an angle of about 80 degrees.  With the loop held flat in the jaws of your pliers bend the wire away from you as shown at right.

Step 22 to instructions for making W Chandelier Beaded out of jewelry wire and beads.
Step 22

Step 23:  Using your round nose pliers, grasp the jewelry wire near the bend you just made and make a loop in the wire.  This loop needs to be larger than the initial loop as it will go through the loop in the center of the V shaped wire component.

Step 23 to instructions for making earrings showing modified figure 8 connector made of jewelry wire.
Step 23

Step 24:  Cut the excess wire tail and close the loop in the Modified Figure 8 connector.  It should now appear as shown at right.  When one of these loops is horizontal, the other loop is vertical.  This allows us to make sure that these earrings hang in the orientation that we want.
Step 24 to instructions to making earrings showing completed figure 8 connector made from jewelry wire.
Step 24

Step 25:  Now we are ready to add some bead dangles.  It is easier to add the five bead dangles to the V shaped wire component before we assemble these earrings.  Using a head pin and 4mm beads, hang a bead dangle from each of the five middle loops in the V shaped wire component.

Step 26:  When these five bead dangles are completed, we then begin to assemble the three wire components that we just made.  Start by opening the larger loop in the Modified Figure 8 component that we made and add this loop to the central loop in the V shaped wire component.  Now close the loop in the Modified Figure 8 component.

Step 27:  Open one of the end loops of the V shaped wire component and add one of the end loops from the W shaped wire component.  Then close the loop.  Now on the opposite end of the W shaped wire component, open the end loop and add the end loop from the V shaped wire component.  Then close the loop.

Step 28:  Using a head pin and a 6mm bead, add a bead dangle to either side of the bottom of the W and one to the central loop of the W shaped wire component.

Step 29:  Open the loop in the top of the Modified Figure 8 connector and add the loop from one of your ear wire findings.  Close the loop.  This completes the assembly of these earrings.  Follow the same steps to make a second earring.

Alternative designs for making earrings:

This alternative jewelry making design makes an earring that is slightly smaller and more delicate.  It eliminates two loops and the bead dangles that hung from them.  The design shown at right was made on the WigJig Cyclops jewelry tool.  The steps in making these earrings are identical to the earlier design, with the modification to the V shaped wire component to account for the elimination of two loops and two bead dangles.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

We wanted to make an earring design with beads on the inside of the body of the earrings.  The result is the design you see here.  This design is a compound design, where we make two jewelry wire components and connect them together rather than trying to make one complex wire component.  This compound earring design makes these earring easier to make consistently.
