Wire Chain Earrings

Instructions for making Wire Chain Earrings out of jewelry wire, beads and jewelry supplies using WigJig making jewelry tools:

Wire Chain Earrings made out of gold jewelry wire, burgundy beads and common jewelry supplies. This Wire Chain Earrings design is a very easy project that matches our Wire Chain Bracelet design.   All you need to do to start is to make two more of the metal links in the bracelet design.  Connect one end of each link to an ear wire finding like the ear wire with post and ball shown at right.  Using a head pin, connect a 6mm bead identical to the bead in the bracelet to the bottom loop in the wire link.  You can also add a metal bead with the 6mm bead.  We used a 2.5mm metal bead in the earrings shown.  Use the same wrapped loop technique to attach the headpin and bead or beads to the wire link.

Using slightly modified steps, we can make the same link smaller and more delicate.  This modified link can be made on essentially any jewelry making jig.  The link itself is shown enlarged on the right.  The link is shown used in earrings above-left.

This is an advanced beginner's jewelry making project.

Step 8:  Remove the jewelry wire from the WigJig jewelry tool.  The jewelry wire will be slightly three dimensional and both the initial and final wire segments will be on top of one another.  We need to make them side-by-side.  This is best done by grasping the top and then bottom loop with Fine Step Jaw Pliers (first step for WigJig Delphi, middle step for the WigJig Olympus or Olympus-Lite jewelry tools.) or round nose pliers and pulling the wire tail associated with that loop.  When completed, the two wire tails should be in the position shown at right.  Now flatten the piece by squeezing it in the jaws of nylon jaw pliers.

Step 9:  Now grasp each loop in turn with nylon jaw pliers or chain nose pliers and while holding the loop in nylon jaw pliers or chain nose pliers, wrap the two wire tails around the center wire segment.  In effect, you are bending the wire back in a "U" shaped bend around the wire segment between the loops.  When completed the wire will appear as shown at right.

Step 10:  Cut each wire tail off in turn.  Experiment with the cut so that you leave enough wire so that you can push the end of the wire down against the finished piece.  After cutting, finish the piece by pressing the two cut ends of the wire flat against the piece with chain nose pliers.  Once this has been completed, squeeze the piece in the jaws of your nylon jaw pliers.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

We like making jewelry wire components that are strong.  Part of the reason for this is that we see jewelry through an engineer's eyes.  We see a jewelry wire component that is weak and could possibly pull apart as something we would never purchase in a store.  We consider weakness in a jewelry design a flaw and it is a flaw that stands out in our view.  The jewelry wire component used to make these earrings is strong.  It does not suffer from weakness in any way.  It also looks like something that wasn't made by a machine.  For these reasons we like these earrings.  Find some interesting, attractive beads and use them with this link to make some nice and strong earrings.
