Double Spiral & Bead Earrings

Instructions for making Double Spiral & Bead Earrings out of jewelry wire, beads and jewelry supplies using WigJig jewelry tools:

These Double Spiral earring designs use the same spiral wire link as in its matching Double Spiral Bracelet.  We have four alternative designs, using the spiral link as the focal point of the earring.

The first alternative design is the most obvious - making an earring using the basic double spirals wire component and the two-to-one connector between that component and the ear wire.  A picture of this earring is shown near right above.  The earring is finished at the bottom with three 6mm beads on head pins (bead dangles).  For the middle 6mm bead, we wanted it to hang slightly lower than the two outside beads so we added a 2x4mm bugle bead on top of the 6mm crystal bead.  Any small beads, seed beads or bugle beads would work just so that the middle 6mm bead is slightly lower than the outside 6mm beads.  You could also use three 4mm beads instead of three 6mm beads for a slightly different visual effect.

These earring designs are advanced beginner's jewelry making projects.

Jewelry Making Skills Required:

  • Ability to straighten jewelry wire using nylon jaw pliers jewelry tool.

  • Ability to make a loop in jewelry wire using round nose pliers or step jaw pliers jewelry tools.
     
  • Ability to make a jewelry wire component by shaping wire on WigJig jewelry tools.
     
  • Ability to make a spiral out of soft jewelry wire using WigJig jewelry tools and Spiral Maker Tool.
     
  • Ability to connect jewelry wire components by opening and closing loops using bent chain nose pliers jewelry tool.

Our second earring alternative is the design shown at left.  Here, we use the same double spiral wire component with the same beads at the bottom, but the connection between the double spiral component and the ear wire is made by two spacer bars and a jump ring as shown at right.  The steps for making these spacer bars is shown below.  You place your initial loop in a straight segment of 1 1/2" long, 20 gauge jewelry wire on peg A in the pattern on your WigJig jewelry tool and then wrap the wire around peg B.  When removed from the jewelry making jig the jewelry wire will appear as shown center-left below.  Cut the excess jewelry wire with flush cutters and close that loop in the spacer bar,  It will appear as shown center-right below.  Finally, complete the spacer bar by converting the "P" loops on either end of the spacer bar into eye loops, using your round nose pliers.  You can view the finished spacer bar below-right.  Make two spacer bars using this same technique.  Connect one spacer bar to one side of the double spirals wire component and the other spacer bar to the opposite side of the double spirals wire component.  Use a medium size jump ring to connect the top of both spacer bars to your ear wire as shown above-right.  Again, the finished earring is shown on the left.

Instructions for making Double Spiral Wire & Beads Earrings with Top Wire Component

Our next earring alternative is the design shown at right. In this alternative we make a "top wire component" to connect between the ear wire finding and the double spiral wirecomponent.  The peg pattern for the top wire component on our WigJig jewelry tool is shown at left.  You use a straight segment of 20 gauge jewelry wire about 2 1/2" long.  Make an initial loop in this jewelry wire segment and place the initial loop on peg 1 in the pattern.  Then wrap the wire around peg 2, and finally around peg 3 as shown.  Remove the wire from the WigJig jewelry tool and it should appear as shown below-left.  At this point you need to cut the excess wire and then close the loop made on peg 3.  When this is completed the jewelry wire will appear as shown below center-left.  In order to make the top wire component connect to the double spiral wire component you need to first convert both"P" loops on the end of the wire component into eye loops and then rotate the loops 90 degrees.  Below center-right you can see the two loops converted from "P" loops to eye loops.  Below right you can view the finished top wire component with the two loops rotated 90 degrees.  To rotate the two loops, you grasp one loop at a time in the jaws of your chain nose pliers and twist the pliers until the loop is rotated 90 degrees.  Rotate the loop on one side clockwise and on the opposite side counter-clockwise.

To assemble these earrings, you need to open both loops in the top wire component and then connect that component to the double spirals wire component.  Once they are connected, you will then need to close both loops.  Add your ear wire finding to the top loop in the top wire component by opening the loop in the ear wire finding, connecting it to the loop in the top wire component and then closing the loop in the ear wire finding.  To complete these earrings you will need to add your beads to the bottom of the earrings as we discussed in the prior designs. 

 

Double Spiral Wire & Beads Earrings with Chain Jewelry Making Project made using gold jewelry wire, sapphire beads and common jewelry supplies.



Our final earring alternative is the design shown at right.  Here, we use purchased chain to connect the ear wire finding to the double spiral wire component.  Use a segment of chain about 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" long with an odd number of links.  Connect the middle link in the chain to your ear wire finding by opening the loop in the ear wire finding, making the connection, then closing the loop.  Connect the end links of the chain to the double spiral wire component using jump rings.  Finish the earrings by adding bead dangles to the bottom of the double spiral wire component as described earlier. 

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

We have provided many ways to take the Double Spirals jewelry wire component and connect it to an ear wire finding to make an earring.  Of the four alternatives we show, our favorite is the alternative design using two spacer bars to connect the ear wire to the double spirals jewelry wire component.  That is the easiest way to make these earrings and the resulting earrings are attractive and strong.
