Wrapped Chain Earrings

Instructions for making the wrapped chain earrings using WigJig jewelry tools, jewelry wire and beads:

To make this earring design, we will be using techniques from the matching Wrapped Chain Bracelet. This is the modified version of the chain and is very similar to the bracelet chain and may be easier to make for some people.  It does not use wrapping of wire around itself.  If you had difficulty in making the prior chain, perhaps you will find this chain easier to make.

This is an advanced beginner's jewelry making project.

Step 7 to New Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making Project

The first eight steps in making this chain are identical to the first 8 Step 8 to New Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making Projectsteps in the bracelet chain with one exception.  Instead of using 2 1/4" of 22 gauge wire, use 2" of 22 gauge jewelry wire.  To make the chain shown, follow steps 1 through 7 until you have 8 segments of wire that appear as shown at left.  Using round nose pliers, take one segment, and make a loop in the end of the jewelry wire as shown at right.

Step 9 to New Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making ProjectNew Step 9:  Using your flush cutters, cut the excess jewelry wire.

Step 10 to New Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making ProjectNew Step 10:  Using your bent chain nose pliers, close the final loop where you just cut Step 11 to Jewelry Wire Wrapped Chain made with WigJig jewelry toolsthe wire.

New Step 11:  Grasp the middle of the jewelry wire segment in the middle step of your step jaw pliers as shown at right.  In the step we are going to make the "U" shaped bend for the initial loop in our chain.  Push both loops up Step 12 to Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making Project made with jewelry wire and beads.until they meet and overlap.

New Step 12:  In order to help get these two loops perfectly overlapped, position both loops on your step jaw pliers and squeeze the two loops together as shown at left.

Step 13 to Wire Wrapped Chain project made with WigJig jewelry tools and jewelry wire.New Step 13:  Remove the chain from your step jaw pliers.  At this point your initial loop in your chain should appear as shown at right.

Step 14 to Jewelry Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making Project

New Step 14:  Now we are ready to begin work on the second loop in the chain.  Take one of your jewelry wire segments from step 7 and insert it into the loops in the first link of your chain as shown at right.  Step 15 to New Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making Project

New Step 15:  Using your round nose pliers make a loop in the end of the wire in the same manner as you did for step 8.  Try to make this loop the same size as the initial loop, by grasping the wire at the same point on your round nose pliers.  When completed your jewelry wire should appear as shown at left.

Step 16 to New Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making Project

New Step 16:  Now we need to make the "U" shaped bend in the wire as we did in step 11.  Grasp the jewelry wire in the middle with the second step of your step jaw pliers.  While holding it in this position, bend both loops up until they meet.Step 17 to New Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making Project showing how to use jewelry tools.

New Step 17:  In order to ensure that the two loops overlap, place the two loops on your step jaw pliers and push them together as show at left.

Continue building your chain by adding links using the steps described here.

Another alternative design is to use this jewelry wire wrapped chain to make a simple earring.  The earring shown at left is a shoulder duster chandelier earring.  This earring is made by adding an ear wire finding to one end of the chain and a bead dangle to the opposite end.  This length of earring may not be appropriate for everyone.  A very similar earring could be made with as few as two or three links of the wire wrapped chain.

A final set of alternative designs it to make the chain the same way, but instead of separating the peg by 1" as we did in step 7, separate the pegs by 3/4".  When separated by 1" the links in the chain are each about 1/2 inch long.  When the pegs are separated by 3/4" the links in the chain would be about 5/16" long.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

There are jewelry making projects that we like more and some that we like less.  The jewelry making projects we like more have the following characteristics in common -- 1. strong, 2. unique and 3. attractive.  This is one of the jewelry making projects that we like more.  Making chains by hand without soldering is something that we like to do.  It gives us a good feeling when we can make something that is normally made by a machine, like chain, but we make it by hand.  Try making this chain design.  We think you will like it.
