S-Spiral Earrings

Instructions for making the S-Spiral Earrings using WigJig jewelry tools, beads, jewelry wire and common jewelry supplies:

"S" Spirals Earrings made using common jewelry supplies and WigJig jewelry tools."S" Spirals jewelry wire and beads earrings made using WigJig jewelry making tools.

This earring design is called "S" Spirals Jewelry Wire Earrings because the two spirals sort of make the shape of the letter "S" in these earrings.  (Sometimes coming up with a good name for an earring design can be more difficult than just making the design in the first place.)  These earrings can be made on any WigJig tool and use the Spiral Maker Accessory to make the two spirals on opposite sides of one piece of wire.  At right, we show two alternative designs for these earrings.  At the far right, we show the basic design, with an open loop at top and bottom.  That design is easier to make and is suitable for advanced beginner's and intermediate wire workers.  At near right, we show a slightly more difficult to make alternative design with wrapped loops at the top and bottom.

This is an advanced beginner's jewelry making project.

"S" Spirals Jewelry Wire Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectStep-by-step instructions for making earrings out of soft jewelry wire using WigJig jewelry tools:

Step 1:  Using your nylon jaw pliers, straighten a segment of 18 gauge jewelry wire for 11 inches.

Step 2:  Using your flush cutter, cut the jewelry wire to a length of 11 inches.

Step 3:  Using your bent chain nose pliers, bend the jewelry wire 90 degrees at a distance of 1 3/4 inches from each end.  Please see the picture below-left.

Step 4:  Using your round nose pliers, grasp the wire at the 90 degree bend and bend the wire 180 degrees.  See the pictures below-center and below-right for how the wire should appear after having made the 180 degree bend.  (The purpose of this step is to make the center of the spiral more rounded.)

Step 5:  Using a permanent marker, make a small mark on the bottom of the wire in the center of the wire.  The bottom of the wire is the side of the wire that the two 90 degree bends point toward.

Step 6:  Using your spiral maker, make two spirals on either end, meeting at the mark on the wire in the center.  .

Step 7:  With your thumbs, bend both of the center wires in the spirals down flat.  Bend each wire toward the center of the opposite spiral.  Try to bend the center wires so that they will end up centered on the opposite spiral.  Please see the picture below-center.

Step 8:  Using your bent chain nose pliers, bend the center wire 90 degrees, just above the outside of the spiral.  See the picture below-right.

Alternative "S" Spirals Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectThis alternative design is rather straight forward.  The difference between this earring and our earlier earring design is that the loops at top and bottom

All the steps up until Step 10 remain exactly the same.  After completing Step 9, the jewelry wire component should appear as shown below center.

Alternative Step 9 to "S" Spirals Jewelry Wire Earrings showing modified spiral link.

Step A:  Using your bent chain nose pliers, grasp the loop at either the top of the bottom of the wire component.  While holding this loop so that it won't deform, wrap the wire tail around the stem of the loop about two times.  Do the same thing for the opposite loop.

StepC to "S" Spiral Jewelry Wire Earrings, Jewelry Making ProjectStep B:  Using a head pin and an eight mm bead, add a bead dangle to the bottom loop in the "S" Spirals wire component.  .

Step C:  Add you ear wire to the top loop in the "S" wire component.  This completes the Alternative "S" Spirals Jewelry Wire Earrings.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

We provided instructions for making permanent spiral earrings in two different configurations.  When we say permanent, we mean that the jewelry wire spirals won't pull apart if they are accidentally snagged.  Using the WigJig Spiral Maker jewelry tool makes it possible to make this permanent spiral.
