Gemstones: Over much of the past year, the price of natural, uncut gemstones was rising very rapidly. At one point in time, some jewelers were commenting that the value of uncut stones was rising so fast, that it did not pay to have the stones cut. One could purchase an uncut stone and in a few months sell the uncut stone for more than it would bring after being cut. Please note that this is a temporary phenomena and was very much brought about because of the decline in the value of the dollar relative to other currencies. Please note that we believe that natural gemstones are not going to increase in value as significantly in the future. We believe that the fact that man-made gemstones like diamonds, rubies and sapphires are chemically identical to the mined gemstones and that the quality of the man-made stones in clarity and color is far superior to the natural gemstones means that over time, people will not be willing to pay the premium required by natural gemstones. This past week, we received 27 natural, mined grade AAA aquamarine 6mm round gemstones from a vendor from India. The stones were relatively expensive because aquamarine is not as available as more common minerals like garnet and peridot. The stones have good cut, and clarity, but unfortunately, the color is unacceptable. These natural aquamarine gemstones are so lightly colored that they are almost clear. Our normal pricing for these stones would mean that we would have to sell the 6mm round aquamarines for $48 per pair, when we can sell better quality man-made aquamarines for $7.99 a pair. At present, we do not intend to sell the natural aquamarine stones for the simple reason that we don't think that our customers would be happy with the product.

Free Jewelry Design: With every newsletter
we provide a new jewelry design
from WigJig University
to spur the creative juices. The new design for this newsletter
is the design for the Double Spirals Jewelry Wire & Beads Bracelet
shown above. This bracelet is an excellent complement to the 30
Degree Spiral Earrings design that we featured in our last newsletter.
We used 18 gauge soft brass to make this bracelet since that is so much
cheaper than gold right now. Ultimately, we may make this bracelet
in gold, just because gold retains its shine and doesn't tarnish.
This is an advanced beginners jewelry making project. 60 inches of 18 gauge soft wire, 24 inches of 20 gauge wire, one commercial clasp, and eight 6mm beads are required to make this bracelet. The beads we selected were 6mm round Swarovski glass crystal beads. The bracelet shown above was made on our WigJig Centaur and requires nine regular pegs and one 1/4" Super Peg to complete. |

Past Techniques: We maintain a techniques web page that provides links to the discussion of techniques in our prior newsletters. You can visit this web page here. Follow the links on that page to the discussion of the technique in that newsletter.
Jewelry Technique:
Now the question is what do you do for those designs where we don't have a
similar template. The answer is easy. We have a page of
templates for each of our jigs.
You
can find that web page here. For any of our designs where we don't
provide a template in pdf format, all you need to do is to print the
template for your jig and color in the holes for your pegs with a pen.
Using that method, if the jig you have is compatible with the design on our
web site, you can use the template and a pen to make your own custom
template for that design. With that template, you can work on the
design away from your computer. That way our readers won't have
problems in printing the pages on our web site.
Nostalgia Corner: Warning! Joke Follows. If you have ever in your entire life been offended by any joke -- please skip the below paragraphs. It is not our intention to offend anyone! We don't write these jokes, we only re-tell jokes that we have heard on the public radio, television or over the Internet. Boomer Humor: Editorial note. After last week's sermon, we received more comments on our newsletter than we normally do and about 1/2 of the comments were that we should bring back our Boomer Humor. So now, back by popular demand is Boomer Humor. This week, we have a joke in honor of former New York Governor Elliott Spitzer and current Detroit Mayer Kwame Kirkpatrick. A mother is in the bathroom, giving her three year old son a bath. The little boy grabs his groin and says "Mommy, are these my brains?" The mother responds simply "No son, not yet." |
